Jadeveon Clowney is investing in himself.

According to USA Today, the South Carolina defensive end -- and consensus top draft pick in 2014 -- has taken out a $5 million insurance policy to protect against future earnings lost to injury.

The policy, which is NCAA-sanctioned, covers only career-ending -- not season-ending -- injuries. However, it was not put in place so Clowney could sit out the Gamecocks' 2013 season, as so many people have speculated.

“Sitting out? I never thought of it,” Clowney said. “I’m going to go to school and play.”

And play he will, with two specific goals in mind.

"More sacks." Oh, "and I'm going to try to lead my team to more wins," Clowney said.

For the former, Clowney has already packed on 13 pounds of mass and ran "something like" 4.54 40-yard dash.

“I want to keep my speed up,” he said. “I don’t want to gain weight and then get slower. I put on like 12 pounds, 13 pounds and kept my same speed, so that’s pretty good.”

The 40 time is incredible for a 6-foot-6 end, but it's his elite -- and ultra rare -- combination of athleticism and power that has NFL personnel men drooling.

Clowney knows all eyes will be on him this fall, and welcomes the spotlight.

"I'm ready for it. I'm just going to deal with it and keep playing like I've been playing, 100 percent. I'll just try to do better than I did last year."

And if he indeed plays better than last year, Clowney will flip that $5 million into much, much more.
