Jerome Hayes, the talented but injury-plagued defensive end for Penn State, is giving pro football another try -- this time with the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League. Hayes is trying to make the roster of the Soul, which along with the rest of the AFL is back after a one-year hiatus. He was a force on the field when he played at Penn State, either at defensive end or special teams. Because of all of his injuries, he could have petitioned the NCAA for another year of eligibility after the 2009 season in Happy Valley but he chose to enter the NFL Draft. Hayes was not drafted and did not hook on with a team, and he returned to his hometown of Bayonne, N.J. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, he was a substitute teacher. But he retained his dream of playing in the NFL, and last October at an open tryout for the Soul, he caught the eye of the Philadelphia coaches.
