Joe Paterno sat in his wheelchair at his family kitchen table where he has eaten, prayed and studied football for more than a half-century as he was interviewed by Sally Jenkins of The Washington Post. It was the last we would ever hear from him. Many will say that lung cancer robbed him of his life, but the Penn State scandal of Jerry Sandusky actually killed him. The legendary figure of College Football was diagnosed with cancer in November, only nine days after being fired due to sex abuse charges against former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky. As his life ticked past and the final two months ate away at him Paterno was left unable to fight any longer. Despite his serious condition and obvious age issues his heart was broken. Paterno loved every minute of coaching and shaping a young mind. It killed him to know that there were people out there that thought he was blind to the fact. In the hospital since January 13th, “Over the last few days Joe Paterno has experienced fur...

  • Paterno died of stage 4 small cell lung cancer, not a broken heart. It's a nasty lung cancer, there is no cure. There is no couple years of hanging on. I wish people would stop trying to infer that he died of a broken heart over his treatment by the board of trustees. Maybe it's more likely that he died of shame.
  • JoePa spent most of his life making Penn State a natioonal name in not only football but in scholastic excellence, studies versus practice and dignity. Sure, he made mistakes. Sure, he should have done more when he found out about the
Sandusky issue and sure he made many mistkes. But why did he, of all people, be made to suffer the most. Why has McQuery not been the subject of more speculation as to why he did not report this problem to authorities. Joe reported it to his superiors; McQuery did the same. So the university shamed Joe publicly, fired him via the phone and McQuery did not even get a slap on the hand. The PSU Board of Trustees should be ashamed of themseves and damned for their actions. All the blame for everything related to this scandal has fallen on Joe. He was the biggest name for the press to attack and get lots of publicity. There is so much more I could say, but I would get carried away even after months have passed.
