TraShaun Nixon of New Mexico State is another talented JUCO transfer looking to make a statement in his senior season, before heading off, hopefully, to a long NFL career. A linebacker for the Aggies of New Mexico State of the WAC Conference. In his first season at NM State, the Oxnard, CA native quite literally exploded onto the scene, with 96 tackles (9.5 for loss), 3 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. Along the way, Nixon earned 2nd Team All-WAC honors. So who is TraShaun Nixon, and how did he end up at New Mexico State? “Well out of high school I was heavily recruited, with New Mexico State being one of the schools. But unfortunately I had to go another route due to my grades. My coach from New Mexico State always told me if I ever got my grades right I will always have an offer with them. I ended up going to Ventura Junior College. I started all 10 games as a freshman and was one of the top OLB’s in the state going into my sophomore year. Alot of schools were starting to call and get in contact with me, and so did New Mexico State. But my sophomore year at Ventura wasn’t what I expected it to be, I ended up playing offense the last five games and played defense only the first 5 games. So the schools started to back off. For a second I started to lose hope in playing D1 ball, but then God reminded me why I went to Junior College. So through it all there was always that one school that always stuck around, and that was New Mexico State. After the season I had schools offering from my first five games of defense, but being that New Mexico State was so loyal to me through everything and seeing how the coaches were, I decided to commit there.”  Nixon explained. A great athlete at the linebacker position with the ability to roam the field, Nixon will offer an NFL team versatility and play-making ability in 2014. But before he reaches that point, Nixon has team goals for 2013. “This coming season I’m really not shooting for stats, I just want to help my team in every way I can and with the Lord’s will, everything else will fall into place.” In 2013 and beyond, TraShaun Nixon is a player to keep an eye on.
