Football fever is starting to take over. About four days away from kick-off against the Bobcats and the excitement is palpable. Here are a few news and notes from around the Louisville program. First, defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin has been released from the hospital and is doing fine. Per a release from UofL, Lorenzo sustained “no orthopedic injuries”, all tests performed on him went well, and his status for Sunday’s game is yet to be determined. Regardless if he plays this weekend or not, this is great news as the injuries could have been much worse. Next, the home opener against Ohio has officially sold out. The last few remaining tickets were sold this morning according to UofL. In addition, Louisville has set a school mark for season ticket sales with 45,627 sold. Great work Cards fans. Finally, I’ve heard from some Louisville fans who are very nervous about the game against Ohio, specifically my good friend Jack Rizzle who is borderline petrified and predicted a last second field goal victory for the Cards. Anything is possible, we’ve seen that in college football, but here is why I am not concerned about the Ohio team. On five occasions last season, the Bobcats gave up over 450 yards of offense to opposing teams. And these are not out of conference games against BCS conference teams who can light it up. Those performances came against these squads: Marshall (82 yards rushing, 432 yards passing) UMASS (156 yards rushing, 373 yards passing) Buffalo (332 yards rushing, 188 yards passing) Akron (186 yards rushing, 298 yards passing) Ball State (357 yards rushing, 231 yards passing) UMASS!!!!!! Now, if you want to make the argument Ohio will move the ball against Louisville because they have their school’s all-time leading touchdown passer Tyler Tettleton and a very good running back in Beau Blankenship, who last season rushed for over 1,600 yards. Then yes, I agree one hundred percent. Ohio will move the ball and will put some points up. However, I still fail to see how Louisville will not score on virtually every possession. Ohio did not face any quarterback last season who is in the league of Teddy Bridgewater, in my opinion. The running backs of Louisville I believe will be a big time problem for Ohio’s defense, which showed last season had a huge problem stopping the run. And I also do not think the Bobcats faced a receiving group as talented as Louisville’s. So again, do I think Ohio will move the ball? Certainly. Do I think they will put up some points? Absolutely. Do I believe this game will come down to the final minutes? Nah Jack (said in Uncle Si voice) I think Ohio will hang with the Cards for about a half, but UofL will ultimately wear them and put a blitz on the Bobcats (slight pun intended) in the 2nd half. Let’s get these games going so we can find out.
