Louisville's Khalib Johnson, Jeremiah Caldwell and Aaron Gunn Enter Transfer Portal

On top of the three Louisville football players that already opted Tuesday to continue their collegiate careers elsewhere, three more are joining them.

Quarterback Khalib Johnson, defensive back Jeremiah Caldwell and offensive lineman Aaron Gunn have all entered their names into the transfer portal, a school representative tells Louisville Report.

Six Cardinals in total have entered the portal following Louisville's spring game last Friday, with all six coming Tuesday. Wide receiver Chance Morro, placekicker James Turner and tight end Dez Melton transferred earlier in the day.

The trio combined to play zero total snaps for Louisville. Johnson and Caldwell were part of the Cardinals' 2022 recruiting class, while Gunn joined during the 2021 cycle.

Johnson was an early enrollee for Louisville last offseason, but an injury that spring limited him, and he was eventually buried on the depth chart last fall in part because of it. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound signal caller chose the Cardinals over Kansas, San Diego State, USF and others, and was ranked as the No. 721 prospect in the nation by the 247Sports Composite.

Caldwell was one of Louisville's higher-ranked commits in the 2022 cycle, coming in as the No. 402 prospect in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound safety had previously been committed to Kentucky before backing off that verbal pledge and picking the Cardinals over Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee and others. He redshirted his first and only year at UofL.

Gunn chose Louisville over Kentucky, Michigan State and West Virginia, and was regarded as the No. 784 prospect in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He would redshirt his first season in 2021, while not seeing any action this past year.

Louisville has now seen 20 players enter the portal following the end of the regular season. Fortunately, head coach Jeff Brohm and the Cardinals have done a good job at countering their portal losses, landing 15 transfer commitments up to this point, and more likely on the way.

Louisville finished their 2022 season with an overall mark of 8-5 (4-4 in ACC), including a 24-7 win in the Fenway Bowl over Cincinnati. They'll kick off their 2023 season against Georgia tech in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 1.
