I guess saying last weekend was the first real weekend of the college football season was an understatement.

The top two teams remain at the top, but six of the eighteen undefeated Top 25 teams lost last weekend, headlined by the upsets of then #3 Florida State by North Carolina State 17-16, #4 LSU losing in the swamp to #10 Florida 14-6 and #6 South Carolina’s beat down of #7 Georgia 35-7 in Columbia, SC. Other undefeated teams who dropped in the polls were Texas, TCU and Northwestern.

This week we will see more of the same as the season gets in full swing with these great games you should put time aside to watch

Red River Shootout between Oklahoma and Texas.  Both sit with one win and another loss will ruin any chances at the Big 12 title and a BCS game.

Stanford vs. Notre Dame as the Irish try and stay in the title hunt, while the Cardinal try and knock another undefeated.

TCU vs.  Baylor in another battle of Big 12 teams needing a win to avoid falling out of the race.

Here is this week’s look at the Top 10:

1. Alabama (5-0) – The Tide goes to Missouri to take on the Tigers and see if the crowd Faurot Field can create some magic like they did in the Big 12.  Sorry for the Tiger fans, they may be in it for a quarter or the first half, but the Tide could be playing on Sunday they are that good.  Roll Tide by 30.

2. Oregon (6-0) – The Ducks took out the Stanford Cardinal killer 52-21 and now have the week before their next test in Tempe vs. Arizona State.

3. West Virginia (5-0) – The Mountaineers got a full taste of the Big 12 in a seesaw game vs. Texas in Austin 48-45.  Here is another high scoring game against Texas Tech.  QB Geno Smith should light up the skies in Lubbock as they win by 3 touchdowns.

4. South Carolina (5-0) – The Gamecocks go from home vs. Georgia winning big to the second game of the week in Death Valley vs. LSU.

5. Kansas State (5-0) – The Wildcats triumphed over in state rival Kansas 56-16 last week will have now have to get ready for Iowa State, who beat previously undefeated TCU.  Can they knock off K-State as they think about their match up next week vs. West Virginia.  Wildcats avoid the upset by 7 points late.

6. Florida (5-0) – The Gators took one big step to a possible match up vs. Alabama for the SEC title by beating LSU.  Now they have a tune up vs. Vanderbilt before they get South Carolina in Columbia next week.  They had better not look past the Commodores as they have beat Missouri last week.  Gators win, but it will be interesting.

7. Notre Dame (5-0) – The Irish put a beat down on Miami last week 41-3 and now they get a Stanford team looking to take another undefeated down, like they did against USC.  The Irish will win another ugly low scoring match, but they better continue using RBs Cierre Wood and George Atkinson III to create the offense.

8. Ohio State (5-0) – After last week’s surprised offensive output in their win over Nebraska, the Buckeyes get a clear road to the end of the season match up vs. their hated team from “up North”.  Their schedule should keep QB Braxton Miller in the Heisman hunt, and possibly the favorite if West Virginia QB Smith stumbles. Buckeyes by 40 points

9. USC (4-1) – The Trojans are going to do their best to keep their chances alive as they woke up after struggling against Utah in their win.  This week they know this week’s opponent Washington beat Stanford, who beat them to ruin their title hopes (for now).  The Trojans need to refocus and start playing like they want a chance against Alabama.  Trojans win by 21.

10. LSU (4-1) – The Tigers were thought to be title contenders but they were showed they may not be ready yet as they lost at Florida 14-6.  This week they go to the game of the week against a highly motivated Gamecock team

Heisman Update

1. West Virginia QB Geno Smith
25/35 for 268 yards and 4 touchdowns.

2. Ohio State QB Braxton Miller
Accounted for 313 yards with 7/14 for 127 yards and 1 touchdown passing and 16 carries for 186 yards a touchdown

3. Kansas State QB Colin Klein
Accounted for 245 yards with 7/14 for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns passing and 10 carries for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns

4. West Virginia WB Stedman Bailey
8 catches for 75 yards and 3 touchdowns

Game of the Week

#4 South Carolina at #10 LSU – Saturday 8:00pm, October 13, 2012 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA

This is just as crucial to the Gamecocks as it is to LSU.  South Carolina is in the middle of their three game hell streak.  They got by Georgia in a surprisingly easy fashion.  They get LSU this week, and get Florida next week, which could decide the winner of the East division.

Even though LSU lost, they still get their chance vs. Alabama on Nov 3rd, which would help their argument in a title chase.

As tough as this one is to call, I think the Gamecocks will show they are riding Coach Steve Suppier’s magic and the arm of QB Connor Shaw and the legs of RB Marcus Lattimore and a vastly improved defense to a narrow victory in Death Valley.

Prediction:   South Carolina continues its winning ways in a close one 28-24

Record: 5-1
