Michigan Football opened the season in impressive fashion by thrashing Central Michigan to the tune of 59-9. 3 Stars Devin Gardner (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images) Devin Gardner he did toss two interceptions, but he also accounted for 3 touchdowns in barely over a half of football. His final line was 10-15 passing for 152 yards and one touchdown. He also churned out 52 yards rushing and two more TDs. Cam Gordon recorded 4 tackles, 2 sacks and a pass break up. He very nearly corralled the pass he broke up in the end zone, but it was just out of reach. The senior captain looked decisive and confident. Anchored by everybody’s All-American, Taylor Lewan, the offensive line paved the way to 243 yards rushing and allowed just 1 sack. 3 Key Plays On the first possession of the game, Central Michigan dropped back to punt it away. Dymonte Thomas came busting through the line like freight train and blocked the punt which was scooped up by Joe Reynolds and returned for a Michigan touchdown. This play figures to be the first of many big plays that Thomas will make in his career. On the opening drive of the second half, Michigan struck first thanks to this play. Devin Gardner executed a great play fake and then threw deep to Joe Reynolds, who made a tremendous catch in traffic, for 45 yards. Two plays later Fitz Toussaint scored his second touchdown of the game. Late in the third quarter, Shane Morris rolled out and rifled a pass to Devin Funchess for 36 yards. Morris was 3-4 on the first drive of his career and looks as good as advertised. Stat of the game Six different Wolverines scored touchdowns. Random observations On a 3rd down and 13 in the 1st quarter, Central tried to run a screen pass by the Wolverines. Jarrod Wilson blew up the play as he laid the lumber on Saylor Lavallii as soon as the ball arrived. It sure is fun to watch Dennis Norfleet in the open field. It would appear that Michigan is going to have a lot of playmakers on defense. Shane Morris looks the part of a future star. He is poised, has a rocket arm and oozes leadership. Yet another true freshman who impressed was cornerback Channing Stribling. He totaled 5 tackles and 1 forced fumble. Random stats Derrick Green was Michigan’s leading rusher with 11 carries for 58 yards and 1 touchdown. Jeremy Gallon extended his streak to 27 consecutive games with a reception. True freshman linebacker Ben Gedeon tallied 4 tackles and looked good doing it. Eight different Michigan players caught a pass in this game. Brendan Gibbons tied a school record when he converted his 14th straight field goal attempt late. Michigan has now won 15 straight home games which is the second longest streak in the nation. What it means This was Michigan Football. They pounded a inferior opponent by playing strong defense and running the ball effectively. We’ll find out a lot more about this team next week, but they did exactly what they had to do today.
