When it comes to spring football, usually no news is good news and unfortunately for Michigan that held true as they announced on Wednesday that two-year starting linebacker Jake Ryan (an All-Big Ten selection last year) has suffered a torn ACL. It apparently happened during practice yesterday.

Michigan is saying he is out "indefinetly" at this point, but usually recovery time for an injury of this nature can between six and nine months and that means Ryan may not be out the entire season. However, Ryan started as a true freshman and still has a redshirt available

No doubt about it, the Wolverines will miss him, after all he did lead the team with 88 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles last year. Luckily this is a deep position group, but that was with Ryan patrolling the strong-side spot.

If Ryan can't go this year look to senior Cam Gordon to replace him as he is behind him on the depth chart and is the only linebacker on the roster that really fits the bill as a strong-side linebacker as well.

Some may point to the recovery that Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings as proof that someone can recover fast and be ready for the season, however Peterson is a once in a lifetime case and don't expect anyone else to recover that quickly.
