About a year after a public flirtation with the Big Ten, Missouri will officially join the SEC on July 1, 2012, the conference office announced Sunday.

The announcement came as no surprise, as Missouri and the SEC have been in discussions for weeks. The release said the SEC member presidents and chancellors had voted unanimously to bring Missouri on board as its 14th member.

The SEC will be a 14-team conference in 2012 as fellow Big 12 member Texas A&M will also join on the same day as Missouri.

"The Southeastern Conference is a highly successful, stable, premier athletic conference that offers exciting opportunities for the University of Missouri," said Chancellor Brady J. Deaton. "In joining the SEC, MU partners with universities distinguished for their academic programs and their emphasis on student success. The SEC will provide our student-athletes with top flight competition and unparalleled visibility. We came to this decision after careful consideration of the long term best interests of our university. We believe the Southeastern Conference is an outstanding home for the Mizzou Tigers, and we take great pride in our association with this distinguished league."

Missouri will more than likely end up in the SEC East, while A&M will go to the West. But most of the current SEC membership are likely glad that they won't have to deal with the 13-team scheduling nightmare now that Missouri is coming on board.

The Big 12 had hinted at this inevitability last week when it announced West Virginia as its 10th member for 2012 and didn't include Missouri as a member.

While Missouri would still probably prefer to be going to the Big Ten, the Tigers must face a tough reality about playing in the SEC. Mizzou may catch a break by going to the weaker East, but Missouri would probably rank 11th or 12th in the new 14-team SEC.

Good luck with that Mizzou.
