Fall camp has started and that means that position battles, either real or imagined have begun in earnest. Perhaps it is a testament to just how organized and well put together this year’s team is that there really aren’t that many positions up for grabs. Of course the one position most people think is up for grabs is the quarterback spot.
For all intents and purposes the quarterback battle is supposed to be a three way race between Zac Lee, Cody Green and Taylor Martinez. Most Husker fans know that last season there was a marked battle between Lee and Green when Lee began to struggle with his accuracy and decision making.
Green, then a true freshman actually started the game against Baylor and Oklahoma but after mixed results he was lifted for Lee against the Sooners and Zac held onto the starting job the rest of the season.
During the off-season, it was announced that Lee had hurt his throwing hand during the Virginia Tech game and that had lent itself to his (at times) absolutely miserable performance on the field.
Lee had surgery and his recovery has been slow enough going that he did not participate in the Huskers‘ spring game leading to more speculation that Martinez and Green would get a leg up in the race.
More intrigue was added by the local media on Thursday when Taylor Martinez was not at practice. Many reporters began painting this as shades of Eric Crouch v Bobby Newcombe when Crouch actually left the team for a few days, had to be persuaded back by then head coach Frank Solich and was promptly handed the starting job.
Of course, that was a gross overreaction to the situation and it turns out that the coaches had excused Martinez from practice that day and he promptly returned. Here’s the real story, in my opinion.
When the dust settles, the starting quarterback for your 2011 Nebraska Cornhuskers will be none other than……. Zac Lee.
He is in fact Shawn Watson’s choice for the job and he is going to have to either be unable to play due to injury or throwing five interceptions per 10 yard drill in order to lose the job. That means that Husker fans are just going to have to hope that all of his struggles can be chocked up to his injury and that he is actually a much better quarterback than he showed for a great deal of the 2010 season.
