Nash Hutmacher gets first Big Ten dual victory, plus more Huskers news

Nebraska football player Nash Hutmacher keeps impressing on the wrestling mat, plus more Cornhuskers news.

If you haven’t been paying attention to the Nebraska Cornhuskers wrestling team, you should start. The sixth-ranked Huskers notched another top-25 win on Sunday, besting Wisconsin in a Big Ten dual by the score of 28-9, which included another victory for Nebraska football standout, turned wrestler Nash Hutmacher.

I guess saying Nash turned into a wrestler isn’t accurate. He turned back into a wrestler because the Nebraska football defensive lineman was a four-time state champion in South Dakota before joining the Huskers on the football field.

With the blessing of Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule, Hutmacher joined the Nebraska wrestling team and on Sunday, he got his first Big Ten dual victory of the season by way of a 19-14 win over Gannon Rosenfeld of the Badgers.

Top-ranked Ridge Lovett also won his 19th straight match for the Huskers and earned his sixth pin of the season in the 149-pound weight class. Nebraska wrestling is now 9-1 overall in duals and 4-1 in the Big Ten.

Randy Gregory will represent Nebraska football in the Super Bowl

If Nebraska fans are looking for a reason to cheer for one team or another in the Super Bowl, it should be noted that Randy Gregory is on the roster of the 49ers. He hasn’t seen much playing time but is part of the 49ers rotation and had four combined tackles in the wins over the Packers and Lions.

It would be the first Super Bowl title of his career. Gregory had 11 tackles and two sacks this season for the 49ers. The former Nebraska football standout has 22 career sacks.

Iowa hires a new OC

Kirk Ferentz finally has a new offensive play-caller and it’s former Western Michigan head coach Tim Lester, who spent the last season as an offensive analyst for the Green Bay Packers.

Lester was a former quarterback and was the head coach for Western Michigan, where he posted a 34-31 record. His offense is also focused much more on the shotgun, while the Packers have some West Coast principles.

It will be interesting to see how dramatic the change is but there should be more gun and more spread. It’s also something to note since the Hawkeyes remain the only protected rival for Nebraska football in the Big Ten.

And Iowa with a respectable offense is a scary thing.
