In the wake of news that five-star Georgia Bulldog quarterback-commit Dylan Raiola will be visiting the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Dec. 15, three-star Husker quarterback-commit Daniel Kalin scheduled a visit with fellow Big Ten Conference member Michigan State, according to 247Sports’ Justin Thind.

Experts don’t only predict that Raiola will alter his commitment for the third time, but it also seems as if Nebraska promised him the starting position, resulting in potential Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord’s moving on from the program.

The commitment of these two highly-touted prospects would make future competition for a starting job fierce. Kaelin is a Nebraska native that is the 744th ranked overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Kaelin is the No. 48 quarterback, while Raiola is the 8th best overall prospect and the top-ranked pocket-passer.

Despite the recent news of potentially program-changing commitments, head coach Matt Rhule and the Nebraska Cornhuskers decided they would still honor Kaelin’s scholarship. In an article from on3, Nebraska insider Sean Callahan details the reason a five-star recruit like Raiola would even consider coming to a program that hasn’t made a bowl game since 2017.

“Well, you know his uncle, Donovan Raiola, is the offensive line coach at Nebraska,” Nebraska insider Sean Callahan said about Nebraska working to flip Raiola on Monday. “He was the only coach retained from the Scott Frost coaching staff. The offensive line played well this year and things are really strong, I think, with Matt Rhule and Donovan Raiola. So it looks like his position is solid in Lincoln with this coaching staff.

“But you know, the Raiola family came to a game again this year in Lincoln. They were on the sideline for a home game, and they did that last year as well. You just didn’t think much of it in that he’s committed to Georgia, he moved to Buford, Georgia to be closer to his new school. So nobody could’ve really thought that this would all come out.”

Current Nebraska Cornhusker commit Daniel Kaelin was Matt Rhule’s 1st quarterback commit as a Husker, and is a Nebraska native and lifelong fan

Although Kaelin originally committed to the Missouri Tigers, his flip to Nebraska did not come as much of a surprise when you consider his lifelong affiliation with the program. Kaelin played high school football at Bellevue West high school in Bellevue, Neb. His commitment to the Huskers was Matt Rhule’s first quarterback commitment as the head coach of Nebraska.

If he were to flip again, it would be his third commitment just as it would be Raiola’s. In the aforementioned on3 article, Kaelin explained why Nebraska meant so much to him.

“It means so much to me to know I will be a Husker and playing for the team I have imagined myself playing for since I first started playing football,” Kaelin said. “Staying home also means being closer to family and friends, which will allow me to have a greater support system, which is extremely important for an athlete, and for them to be able to stay close to me and watch all of my games in person.”

Kaelin said that he believed in Rhule’s ability to turn the program around. It may be hard for him to get the starting job with Raiola coming in, and as a result he is visiting a program with a clearer path to a starting job in Michigan State.

The Michigan State Spartans will welcome Nebraska Cornhuskers’ quarterback commit Daniel Kaelin to a sparse quarterback room

Two of the three quarterbacks that got significant playing time with the Michigan State Spartans in 2023 entered the transfer portal following the season. Redshirt freshman Katin Houser and true freshman Sam Leavitt left redshirt junior Noah Kim to find a new home.

Houser replace Kim in a mid-October game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and the Spartans never looked back. While there is a new coaching staff in East Lansing, it is safe to say new head coach Jonathan Smith is not content with the current quarterback situation.

Kim threw for six touchdowns and six interceptions with just over 1,000 yards before getting benched in the middle of the season. Kim had just over a 50% completion rate with one touchdown and six interceptions when playing Power-Five opponents. Although it is unclear whether Kaelin will join Kim in the 2024 season, it is clear that Kaelin is exploring the idea of moving on from the Huskers.
