It’s somewhat surprising to hear about a transfer announcement amid spring practice, yet that’s precisely what unfolded for Notre Dame football last Friday.

Senior cornerback Clarence Lewis, hailing from New Jersey, has officially entered the transfer portal, as confirmed by multiple sources on Friday afternoon. Standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 196 pounds, Lewis has been a notable presence in the secondary, boasting a career marked by numerous starts for the Fighting Irish.

Lewis’s standout season occurred in 2021, during which he tallied 53 tackles, a sack, forced a fumble, and intercepted a pass. His departure will undoubtedly leave a void in both depth and experience within the team’s cornerback position.

As Lewis still holds one year of eligibility, speculation arises regarding his next destination. Nonetheless, the Notre Dame community extends its best wishes to him, wherever his journey may lead.

Moving forward, the Fighting Irish are hoping to secure some notable commitments to their future recruiting classes. Marcus Freeman and company have been working hard to get Notre Dame back to the top of college football.

It will be interesting to see how the team looks this season. They lost some key players but have a lot of young players ready to take the next step. Losing Lewis is tough, but they should be just fine at the cornerback position.
