The Ohio State Buckeyes are off to a 2-0 start and are ranked No. 4 in the nation, but they may have to try and move to 3-0 without their Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback. Braxton Miller suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee during Saturday’s 42-7 win over San Diego State. Head coach Urban Meyer says his star quarterback is “day-to-day.” Miller was injured during Ohio State’s first drive of the game on his first carry, which came on a fourth-down conversion. Kenny Guiton replaced him at quarterback and the Buckeyes didn’t miss a beat. But this Saturday on the road against Cal, they will miss Miller more than they did against the Aztecs. Meyer has said that Miller likely could have re-entered the game if needed against San Diego State, but the coaching staff decided to keep him on the sideline. Miller wanted to go back in and felt that he was fine. He was fitted with a knee brace but stood on the sidelines with a baseball cap on. Guiton is a senior captain and clearly knows what he’s doing on the field. But he’s in no way the explosive talent that Miller is. Guiton tossed two touchdown passes and ran for another on Saturday, and also threw for 152 yards and rushed for 83 more. Ohio State will return to practice on Tuesday and we would be shocked if Miller does anything more than light duty work. Meyer isn’t going to risk his prized quarterback any more than he needs to. As for this weekend there is really no way to tell whether or not Miller will suit up. It will more than likely be a game-time decision. Cal has opened the season 1-1 under new head coach Sonny Dykes. The Golden Bears dropped their opener to Northwestern 44-30, and struggled in Week 2 against Portland State, but escaped with a 37-30 win. Still, they should present more of a challenge than San Diego State did.
