Ohio State Loses Out On A Game Changing Coach. Where Does The Amazing Program Go From Here?
BRYAN TERRY/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK

Ohio State has an open hole at its running back coaching position after Tony Alford left to join its rival Michigan last week. This week, reports coming out of Columbus, Ohio, say Ohio State could be targeting former NFL running back and current Oklahoma running back coach DeMarco Murray.

Ohio State’s Loses Out On DeMarco Murray

According to Pete Nakos from On3.com, DeMarco Murray is staying in Norman after being tied to the Ohio State opening. The Sooners have offered Murray a new 3-year contract.

I always thought it would be a long shot for Murray to join the Buckeyes. Murray has been a Sooner since day one, and that’s where he played college football, so it was going to be hard for Ohio State to get him to leave his home. At the same time, it’s Ohio State. They can do pretty much anything, but Murray decided he didn’t want to come to the Buckeyes, so Ohio State has to come up with another plan.

Could The Buckeyes Steal An Alabama Coach?

In an article from Eleven Warriors last week, Andy Anders named six potential candidates for running back coach at Ohio State. One of the names that stood out was Robert Gillespie, currently the Alabama running back coach, and the Buckeyes would make an insane hire if it were to get him.

Gillespie joined Alabama in 2021 after serving as the running back coach in North Carolina from 2018 to 2020. Before that, he was the running back coach at Tennessee, where he produced one of the best running backs in the country, Alvin Kamara.

I never thought Alford would leave for Michigan, so Gillespie could leave Alabama. It helps that the man who brought him to coach there, Nick Saban, is no longer coaching the program.

Buckeyes fans shouldn’t lose too much sleep over the running back coaching position. Whoever they hire will be the right man.
