Soon the revisionists of history will say that Penn State football on the field was on the downslide with Joe Paterno at the helm. They'll use that argument in saying the program needed a shot in the arm. Well, everyone can use some juice now and then, but when critics try to rationalize it by saying JoePa's program was tanking, they would be wrong. Fact is, Penn State had been doing very well, thank you, under JoePa the past several years. The dark period on the field was 2000-04, when Penn State had four losing seasons in five years. But since then and until he was let go, JoePa's Penn State team went 66-21 for a winning percentage of 75.9 – higher than his career winning percentage of 74.9. That's right, higher than his career mark. And in those last six-plus years, Penn State won two Big Ten titles (2005 and 2008) and was in first place in the Leaders Division of the conference – and unbeaten in Big Ten play – last fall when JoePa was jettisoned.
