As mentioned previously, the Sportress of Blogitude is staying away from all the sordid and damning details related to the fake girlfriend hoax saga of Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te’o. But, as also mentioned previously, any opportunity to crack a quick joke or highlight the sometimes feeble attempts of others trying to capitalize on all the Te’o-related drama will be greeted with open arms (see here, here and here). As is the case with this not-so-appetizing stab at co-opting the artificiality of Te’o's fake dead girlfriend into an ad that tries to convince folks who feast upon the cooked flesh of animals to instead taste and, let’s be honest, choke down some fake, presumably gross, meat. PETA, the purveyors of provocative — and sometimes, effective — campaigns to advance the organization’s animal rights agenda, has hopped on the Manti Te’o Easy Comedy Gravy Train (maybe gravy ain’t the right word) in its latest ad that touts the many benefits on meatless chicken wings. Mmmm…my stomach is growling just thinking about it. Hardy har har. PETA’s statement: Manti Te’o may have been buffaloed by a fake girlfriend, but sometimes “fake” is actually better. That’s why PETA created this billboard urging football fans to avoid unnecessary roughness to chickens on Super Bowl Sunday by intentionally grounding real chicken wings and opting for play-action fake fowl instead: Those animals in PETA’s “Glass Walls” video? Unlike Manti’s make-believe girlfriend, their deaths are real. Birds slaughtered for their wings and other body parts are often dropped into tanks of scalding-hot water while they are still conscious and aren’t covered by even the meager protections of the Humane Slaughter Act.   The price of chicken wings is currently skyrocketing because of higher feed costs caused by this summer’s drought, which makes now the perfect time to try vegan wings, such as Gardein Classic Style Buffalo Wings, a favorite of vegetarian and former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams.  This Super Bowl Sunday, opt for healthy and humane faux wings (find recipes at PETA’s Living page). That way, nobody gets hurt. Ha, unnecessary roughness. That’s a football term! Still, while I support the continued efforts to provide a more humane environment for the animals that we eat, I will not be eating anything with the word “faux” in its name. Sorry.
