Continuing on with Week 12 of the Buckeye Empire Summer Series, we take a look at Tight End Blake Thomas. Blake is in his second year with the Buckeyes after redshirting the entire 2012 season as a true freshman.
Blake came to Ohio State by way of the powerful St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Where he helped the Wildcats win their 11th State Championship. At 6’5” 250 pounds Blake has a reputation as being an overpowering blocking tight end but he also has hands that are soft enough to catch the football. Coming out of high school he was ranked the 16th best tight end by Rivals.com. Before committing to Ohio State he was strongly considering Boston College, but once Ohio State extended an offer it was a done deal.
During the spring game this year when he had 2 receptions for 40 yards, one of which was a 34 yarder which showed off his soft hands. With his play in the spring game and with his skill set it looks like Blake will be back up to junior Jeff Heuerman and to sophomore Nick Vannett. With losing the fullbacks from last year all three tight ends are going to need to be versatile on the field playing both fullback and tight end this year.
Although Blake may not see the field much this year everyone should look forward to seeing this young man make plays in the future.
