After a tough defensive showing in 2023, coach Brian Kelly and LSU football have placed a significant emphasis on recruiting that side of the ball, and early on, it appears to be paying off. Earlier today, Tuesday, April 30, the Tigers were included as one of the top-five schools in contention for four-star linebacker recruiting target Tavion Wallace.

Four-star recruiting target lists LSU football as one of his top-five remaining schools

Four-star linebacker recruiting target Tavion Wallace is the kind of player you really hope to have on your side, because when he’s lined up opposite of your team, he has the ability to shut down just about anything behind the line of scrimmage.

As a junior in 2023, he managed to record 58 total tackles which included 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. While his stats won’t exactly pop out on first glance, it’s his explosiveness that really makes things dangerous.

In turn, that’s why it was so encouraging when he released his list of top-five schools, which notably included LSU football among several other national powers.

Wallace, a 6-foot-1, 197-pound linebacker out of Jesup, GA, ranks among the very best in the country, sitting as a high four-star, according to 247Sports. Right now he’s ranked No. 26 nationally, and No. 3 at his position, but if he’s able to gain muscle over the offseason while maintaining his explosiveness, it wouldn’t surprise at all to see his spot move up before things are all said and done.

As encouraging as it is to see the Tigers listed among his top-five, it is important to note that the purple and gold are currently looking like the one team solidly on the outside looking in. As we stand today, the big-time recruiting target has four official visits lined up, as he’ll take the trip to Arkansas on May 31, Georgia on June 7, Florida on June 14 and Florida State on June 21.

In short, LSU is the only program out of his list of top schools who have yet to schedule Wallace for an official visit.

While an official isn’t the most important factor in a recruitment, it’s certainly one of the top ones, and it could mean that this is likely an uphill battle for the Tigers. While the in-state Georgia Bulldogs figure to make a pretty strong push for the talented linebacker, Florida State appears to be the current favorite to eventually land his talents as a part of their class of 2025.
