Missouri ready to apply to SEC soon

Missouri applying to the SEC is “inevitable and imminent” according to a report by Pete Thamel, of the New York Times.

A source with direct knowledge of Missouri’s plans informed Thamel that the university is in the process of applying for membership to the SEC, saying that the decision to apply is “inevitable and imminent,” but did not have an exact timeframe to share. Thamel reports that Missouri’s Board of Curators will meet at the end of the week and it is expected they will discuss the procedure to leave the Big 12 and apply to the SEC.

According to the report, Missouri expects there to be little standing in the way of securing enough votes from SEC presidents to join the conference. Previous reports have suggested that Missouri may not have the support needed to be accepted in to the conference. Missouri would be the SEC’s 14th member.

The possibility of losing Missouri may come as news to Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas, who has said recently that he intends on Missouri being a part of the Big 12 in 2012 regardless of their decision. Neinas has gone on record suggesting that he believes Missouri will remain in the Big 12, although it seemed as though he was trying to convince everyone that everything was fine, even those representing Missouri.

Missouri has been the latest gear in the realignment process. If Missouri does end up leaving the Big 12, the conference will be faced with having nine members in 2012, with the departures of Missouri and Texas A&M and addition of TCU. If the conference wishes to get back to 12 schools the most likely candidates seem to be Louisville, West Virginia and maybeCincinnati. BYU has already turned down the idea of joining the Big 12 and Air Force has said they turned down the possibility as well. Air Force is a likely candidate to join the Big East, who may also be seeking the addition of Boise State in a desperate attempt to stay afloat and try to cling on to at BCS at-large.

Big East commissioner John Marinatto has a conference call scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday to discuss “current information on conference realignment.” On Friday the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA announced a plan to unite their conferences, in which MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said that any school potentially leaving the conference would not be allowed to keep their non-football programs in their conference.

This looks to be a messy week for realignment to say the least.
