Former members of the University of Oklahoma football program have significantly given back to their alma mater.
Former OU quarterback now with the St. Louis Rams Sam Bradford announced a $500,000 gift, while former OU running back now with the Minnesota Vikings Adrian Peterson is giving $1 million to the OU Athletics Department to support the construction of Headington Hall, a new $75 million, 230,000 square feet student housing facility opening fall 2013.
“My experience at Oklahoma made it possible for me to realize my dreams,” said Bradford in a statement. “The coaches, the academic environment and every aspect of being a student-athlete at OU made me a better person. I am honored to give back to a program that did so much for me and hope that in some way this contribution can make it possible for those who follow me to enjoy the same kind of experience I did as a Sooner.”
The university will recognize Bradford's gift by naming the Wagner Dining Hall, located inside Headington Hall, "The Sam Bradford Training Table."
Vikings running back Peterson's $1 million donation is the largest ever donated to the school from a former athlete. The football team's meeting room will now be named in Peterson's honor.
"I always hoped to be in position to donate back to the University of Oklahoma and make it an even better place; do whatever I could to help the university that did so much for me," said Peterson in a university statement. "It was a no-brainer to do it, and I am thankful that I’m in a position to give back to OU and to show my appreciation."
