Arguably, the best play of this past college football season happened in the Outback Bowl, when South Carolina Gamebcocks’ defensive end Jadeveon Clowney obliterated Michigan’s Vincent Smith, causing a fumble which Clowney recovered. Aside from the outstanding year the soon-to-be junior had, that one play thrust Clowney into the national spotlight and makes him an early season favorite in the Heisman Trophy race, regardless of the award never going to a strictly defensive player only. If Clowney was eligible for the NFL Draft, there is very little doubt that he would be the #1 overall draft pick in April. You have to be three years removed from high school in order to enter the NFL Draft, Clowney has one more year to go. It’s a logical rule. The NFL is typically stronger and faster, and most college football players are not ready for that, physically, but Clowney is not most college football players. He is 6-foot-6 and 256 pounds, and plays at a speed and ferociousness that most college kids don’t.
