Spring Competition Pushes Nebraska Quarterbacks

Jeff Sims and Heinrich Haarberg are engaged in a "healthy competition" at quarterback, says Nebraska football offensive coordinator and QBs coach Marcus Satterfield.

Speaking after Tuesday's practice, Satterfield of Sims: "We went into this spring wanting to take care of the football and increase his completion percentage, and he's done both of those to this point."

The transfer from Georgia Tech has "a nice, calming demeanor out there," Satterfield said. "He's never too high, never too low."

As for Haarberg, the sophomore from Kearney is a big, tough and athletic runner, but "he can throw the football as well," Satterfield said. "So he allows you to be multiple in a lot of the things we're doing offensively. Really pleased with his development thus far."

Satterfield said last season's starter, Casey Thomson, is "right on schedule" in his rehab from shoulder surgery. "Mentally, he's really good," Satterfield said. "He works at it, grinds at it."

Tuesday's practice was the 13th of spring ball, which wraps up with Saturday's Red-White game at 1 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
