Without a doubt, Stephen Orr Spurrier is the most interesting man currently coaching in college football, and one of the most interesting in the history of the game. Spurrier’s coaching credentials speak for themselves, as he has rebuilt programs and elevated them to heights never before seen at Duke, Florida, and South Carolina. Still, the most memorable Spurrier attribute is his ability to fire off a quip or two that sound essentially harmless until you examine them a little closer. Spurrier has long been a master troll of other coaches, although in the early going, his troll game was blunt and to the point. In the Old Testament pre-BCS days, Spurrier unapologetically ran up scores, and excoriated opponents in the media. This vengeful, Old Testament Spurrier was the sort to give us the Free Shoes University quote, and to remind us that we cannot, in fact, spell Citrus without UT. After an unsuccessful stint in the NFL, Spurrier seemed kindler and gentler, but he had really just refined his trollcraft.
