tamaskan 300x236 Tamaskan dogs related to NC State mascot poisoned

In another potential case of fandom run amok, it has been reported by the Elizabeth City Advance this morning that four dogs, including two Tamaskan dogs with ties to NC State mascot, Tuffy, have been posioned by anti-freeze laced fish on the owner’s property.

All four dogs are recovering at an animal hospital in neigborning Virginia and there is good hope for their recovery.

While it hasn’t been reported whether the two dogs were intentionally targeted by someone from a school other than N.C. State, it is certainly reasonable to speculate this is the case.

This incident just shares too many similarities to the recent alleged posioning of oak trees at Toomer’s Corner on the Auburn campus by Harvey Updyke.

In a world where sports has become the core of some people’s indentity, it is unfortunate, but not difficult to believe the incident with the Tamaskans.

There is a well studied phenomenon in sports management research called BIRGing– basking in reflected glory. This occurs when a fan takes personal pride or gains some sort of satisfaction from his favorite team’s success or committing an act which he or she believes will help his team succeed.

In some twisted way, the individual who poisoned the four dogs probably believed just this– that they were helping their school’s cause.

If it turns out that this was a random act of violence committed by a sick individual with no ties to an NC State rival, then so be it.

A heinous act like this just seems too calculated to not have an alterior motive.

These poor dogs were defenseless to the harm that was placed upon them.

Let’s all hope the world isn’t becoming a place where the actions allegedly performed at Toomer’s Corner and to these four dogs will become the norm rather than exceptions to the rule of decent and moral human behavior.
