The Ohio State University Marching Band put on a hell of a videogame-inspired performance at halftime of the OSU-Nebraska game Saturday night, a game which coincidentally featured a videogame like score of 63-38. I'm not one to wax poetic about the band, especially since a couple of self-important band members tried to start a fight with us way back in Columbus with the epic, ironic, angry words "What have you done with your life? I've dotted the 'i"!" But the pregame march down the field is a can't-miss for me. And I wish I had been at Ohio Stadium Saturday night for this halftime performance. It includes tons of throwback references to Pac-Man, Zelda, Tetris, Space Invaders, and Mario, most of which the 19-year-olds in the band have no frigging clue what they're talking about. I guess Halo is in there for good measure. Some highlights include: Kicking off with Space Invaders at the beginning. Tetris at 1:25. The greatest theme in videogame his...

Mid-Term evaluations: Big Ten

Is Ohio State the class of the Big Ten? It certainly seems that way with the Buckeyes jumping out to a 6-0 start following their smashing win against Nebraska this past weekend. Urban Meyer has the Buckeyes thinking big once agin, but a postseason ban will mean the fun really starts next season. Regardless, Ohio State is opening some eyes now, and they are scary. Here is a quick...

Helmet Stickers – Ohio State vs. Nebraska

Week Six of the college football season has come and gone and once again your Empire team is here to pass out a few helmet stickers to deserving Buckeyes, and there were oh so many from Saturday night’s 63-38 blasting of the Cornhuskers. Urban Meyer notched his first night-game victory of his Ohio State head coaching career and the Buckeyes now sit at 6-0 overall and 2...

Sabino's loss a tough one for OSU

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's win over Nebraska last Saturday night was a costly one as senior linebacker Etienne Sabino broke a bone in his leg and will likely miss a month of action. "It's a tremendous blow," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said. "He's a very good player, but it goes beyond that. Sabino's like a son and a brother to everybody. He'...

High gear, high hopes for Buckeyes

All that's really been won so far are a couple of games that actually help Michigan in the standings. All that's certain about the next month is that Ohio State will be favored to beat the likes of Indiana, Purdue, Penn State and Illinois, and even if those and the two bigger games that follow go in Ohio State's favor, the Buckeyes will still be watching on television...

Roby finally gets on board with first picks

A week ago, Bradley Roby was getting a lot of kidding from his fellow Ohio State defensive backs because they all had interceptions and he didn't. After all, Roby was the one member of the secondary who was getting rave reviews from the coaches to that point. Yet he had dropped his only real shot at picking off an opposing pass. There was no need to fret. Roby returned one...

Several Buckeyes garner weekly accolades

Junior running back Carlos Hyde, who rushed for 140 yards on 28 carries and four touchdowns in No. 12 Ohio State’s 63-38 win over No. 21 Nebraska, was named the Big Ten Conference’s Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday....

OSU O-line: From 'nonfunctional' to team leaders

Andrew Norwell says when he and the rest of Ohio State's offensive linemen walk into a room, the conversation stops and everyone takes note of the small group of large men. People are noticing them even more these days, now that they're central figures on a team that is unbeaten and ranked No. 8. Coach Urban Meyer credits the line for the Buckeyes' big wins the past...

Are You Not Entertained?

Back from an abysmal season that left everyone with a bad taste in their mouths. Back from what could have been a long descent before even thinking of catching a glimpse of reprisal...

Monday Morning Optimism Week 6: Ohio State vs Nebraska

The official image of Monday Morning Optimism You would think that a week like this one would make for an easy Monday Morning Optimism column, and you’re right.
