It’s been a few days since the last DUI or PI that we had reported on, so it was about time for another, especially since we are so close to actually starting the college football season.
This time around the culprit is Tennessee Volunteers senior linebacker Austin Johnson, 22, who was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication outside of a Knoxville night club overnight on Sunday. Johnson posted a $1,000 bond and has a court date set for August 4th.
Listed as this season’s to-be starter at weakside linebacker according to the Tennessee media guide, Johnson is a three-time SEC Academic All-Conference selection and tallied 44 tackles during the 2010-2011 season.
With no previous history of bad behavior, this one looks like it could have been a one-off mistake by a senior looking to get in another night of fun before their last collegiate season kicks off. By most accounts, Johnson is one of the team’s unspoken leaders who is a strong student and well-respected by his teammates and peers.
Regardless, Johnson’s decision to get wasted in public just prior to the season was dumb, and earns a place in our Hall of Morons. Hopefully the Hall won’t grow any more in coming weeks and we can just get down to the business of football, both on the college and pro gridirons.
After all, its been a busy summer for those guys who just don’t know how to handle all the time–or extra money–they have on their hands.
