Tennessee Vols OL coach Glen Elarbee addresses controversial position switch

One of the biggest on-field stories surrounding the Tennessee Vols this offseason was the addition of LSU transfer offensive tackle Lance Heard.

The Vols landed Heard after Gerald Mincey left Tennessee for Kentucky.

Mincey played right tackle for the Vols in 2023.

Heard, however, is expected to play left tackle for Tennessee in 2024, which means John Campbell, the Vols' starting left tackle in 2023, will move to right tackle.

When the news broke that Heard was transferring to Tennessee and would likely be playing left tackle, Campbell sent some cryptic tweets that suggested he wasn't happy with the position switch.

A few days later, though, Campbell posted a video that showed him working at right tackle, seemingly confirming that he was on board with the switch.

On Monday, Vols offensive line coach Glen Elarbee met with reporters and he praised Campbell for the work that he's put in at right tackle.

"Credit to him, he’s put in a ton of work in both on the field and in the film room and mentally and has been a great leader while doing it," said Elarbee when asked about Campbell. "I can’t say enough good about him. It is not that guys haven’t done it here. It’s just, it’s not as easy as you want to be and if you don’t put in the time and effort and it’s a tougher transition. He’s been been awesome just, and can’t say enough good about him."

Campbell also met with the media on Monday and he said the transition to right tackle has been smooth, while pointing out that he just wants to do whatever he can to help the team.

Moving to right tackle was a smart move for former Vols offensive lineman Darnell Wright, who was a top 10 draft selection in the 2023 NFL Draft after just one season at right tackle. Campbell could put himself in a similar situation after the 2024 season. And his positive attitude is a big reason why that could be the case.
