PLAYERS: Jason Simpson
TEAMS:
Whenever anybody talks about the 2013 San Jose State Spartans, they mention the great David Fales and the vaunted Spartans passing game. However, people forget that the Spartans have a run game also. Backup running back Jason Simpson was one of the forgotten players on the Spartans, partly because the fifth-year senior only had 90 career rushing yards. However, after starting running back Tyler Ervin went down with an injury, the seldom used Simpson started to run the ball with authority. Simpson looked like the perfect counter-balance to the Spartans high octane passing game, as he was able to break long runs on the unsuspecting defense. While Sacramento State does not have a great defense, Simpson’s 135 yard rushing on 21 carries is a good sign of things to come. It has been a five year wait for Simpson to breakout, which is what made his performance yesterday against Sacramento State even more remarkable. Simpson talked about his performance last night after the game. “It was incredible. I’ve been preparing for moments like this for four years, and it’s always staying ready. The staff believes in me. Coach Rolin believes in me, and my teammates believe in me. All I had to do was go out and play. Our offensive line makes it easy when you can run through holes,” Simpson told reporters. When asked about being the forgotten man on the Spartans offense Simpson replied, “Everyone knows who (quarterback) David Fales is, and not just because of his good looks, but also because of his strong accuracy. We took it personally that people didn’t expect us to run the ball, and we want to prove that we can. We are going out there with a chip on our shoulder. Our passing game is great, but we can also run the ball.” The new look San Jose State Spartans will need to play with a chip on their shoulder all season long for them to have a chance of reaching another bowl game. Not only did the Spartans lose their head coach to Colorado, but they have also  joined a much tougher football conference, the Mountain West . In order to win a few key games, players like Jason Simpson need to help take the pressure off of quarterback David Fales. If Simpson continues to play with a chip on his shoulder, the Spartans could be more than just a one dimensional offense.   You can follow Jorge on twitter @jraycontreras or add him to your network on google Jorge is the co-founder of  Football and Futbol , Bay Sports Report , Cascadia Sports and Sports Report Arizona
