Toledo Rockets Quarterback, MAC Player Of The Year Enters Transfer Portal
Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

The Toledo Rockets had a great 2023 season making it to the MAC Championship game where they fell to Miami (OH). A big part of their success was quarterback Dequan Finn. Unfortunately, when any player in a smaller conference has a great season, they are likely to leave. It was reported today that he is entering the transfer portal.

Toledo Rockets QB Dequan Finn Enters Transfer Portal

Finn has accounted for 88 touchdowns for the Rockets in the last three years. In 2023, he threw for 2,657 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He could get the job done on the ground adding 563 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns. While he is by no means the top prize in the transfer portal, he should be a solid option for a program looking to upgrade at the quarterback position.

Chasing The NIL Money

Most likely this is an NIL-motivated move. The smaller schools like Toledo often do not have the robust NIL structure of the larger programs. For a player like Finn, the potential to make six figures in college is worth it especially as he will likely not go to the NFL meaning this is his shot to secure the money. While the amount of player movement has its drawbacks, we really cannot blame players for wanting to try and secure money for their future.

The Toledo Rockets will be looking for a new quarterback next season but that is the nature of smaller programs. Every team in the MAC is used to larger programs poaching their players and they now will have to reload for next season.
