Top Transfer Portal Wide Receivers that teams should target ahead of 2024 College Football season
Dan Rainville / USA TODAY NETWORK

The 2024 spring Transfer Portal window has opened! The expected fireworks show still hasn't exactly blown up just yet--outside of Colorado's entire roster--but over 2500 players have entered. There may not be many "elite" names in the portal at the moment, but for college football teams who still need wide receiver help there are definitely some intriguing options.

But who are these top transfer portal wide receiver options? And are they any better than the wide receivers already on your favorite college football teams? Let's dive in.

KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Penn State

KeAndre Lambert-Smith has apparently become the hottest name in the Transfer Portal among all wide receivers. There was some early buzz he may join some other Big Ten school, but now it seems he may be leaning towards joining the SEC. Auburn, Georgia, Texas A&M, Colorado, and West Virginia are all reportedly interested.

Lambert-Smith is one of the most experienced players in the Transfer Portal at any position with his 38 career starts for Penn State. He had his most impressive season last year with nearly 700 receiving yards and should easily slide in as some lucky team's starting outside wide receiver immediately.

He's apparently visiting Auburn this weekend, so that may be his destination given their lack of experience at the position and potential WR1 or WR2 opportunity available. If not, he'll continue to be the top receiver target on the open market.

Justus Ross-Simmons, Colorado State

Justus Ross-Simmons is visiting Syracuse this weekend, which is just an hour and a half from his high school home. His YAC ability and skills underneath and over the middle fit perfectly with Kyle McCord, but if he doesn't land with the Orange, every program in the country should be after him.

He ranked top five in both yards after catch per target and reception, proving to be one of the most elusive receivers in the nation with the ball in his hands. Most of his experience comes at outside wide receiver, but he could operate well from the slot as well.

Sam Brown, Houston

Sam Brown was a part of a special trio last season for Houston, racking up 800 receiving yards. He brings nearly every kind of trait you could want in a receiver. Size, speed, YAC ability, and contested catch skills too. It's clear he's one of the best playmakers in the portal as you can see demonstrated in this post from Clint Brewster of 247 Sports below.

Brown doesn't naturally separate at every level of the field due to his lack of complex nuance in route running, but he's a solid outside receiver who would start immediately for many power conference teams.

Joseph Griffin, Boston College

Joseph Griffin started off his college career with a bang, grabbing five touchdowns as a true freshman. However, after a quarterback change at Boston College his role didn't expand to the extent that many thought it might. Griffin deserves a shot at a program with an accurate quarterback and real opportunity for consistent production.

At 6'3", 200 pounds and an average depth of target 15 yards downfield he's a fantastic deep game and red zone threat for a team needing more size and physicality at the wide receiver position.

Two Second Year Upside Receivers

Two top tier second year wide receivers have entered the portal after getting virtually no opportunities last year and things still not looking like they would be integral parts of their offenses in 2024.

Tyler Williams of Georgia and Karmello English of Michigan both saw just one reception each last fall and played 20 offensive snaps or less on the entire year. Both were in line to be rotational players at best this year, but it's hard to break through on national championship-level rosters.

Tyler Williams brings great size at 6'3", 200 and the ability to win outside consistently. Karmello English brings electric speed, acceleration, and elusiveness. Both are just one year removed from being top 200 recruits in the nation and should be highly coveted Transfer Portal targets.
