2024 NFL Draft: Tyler Davis  Scouting Report

The Clemson Tigers went from zero to national hero under the great coaching of Dabo Sweeney.  From 2011-2023, the Clemson Tigers have won at least nine games. They have also won two national titles, appeared in two others, and have won the ACC eight times. Therefore, Clemson is one of the most successful programs in recent sports history.  Of course, you win that many games with elite NFL-level talent. At the same time, Clemson had Deshaun Watson and Mike Williams. To Trevor Lawrence, Dexter Lawrence. Even at one point, Deandre Hopkins and the list goes on. That being said, another Clemson defensive line prospect may garner NFL calls.  Despite the injuries, Tyler Davis has proven to be a leader and producer of good football.

Davis was a four-star recruit from Apopka, Florida. He then committed to Clemson. Tyler Davis started all 13 games as a True Freshman and was awarded second-team All-ACC. From 2021-2023, Davis was awarded first-team All-ACC for outstanding performance. Davis finished his Clemson career with 16 sacks and 29 tackles for loss. Despite his success, Tyler Davis is almost never talked about as a prospect. However, is Davis worth the conversation? Let’s dig into the film.

Tyler Davis Strengths

• For a man his size, he Has a good first step and can get upfield quickly.
• He is one of the best in the draft at the point of attack, playing with a great pad level. He is also one of the best run-stoppers in the draft. He has a good strike-first mentality in his hands and natural leverage. He has the strength to jolt the offensive linemen and shed the block to make plays.
• All 32 teams can use him in multiple schemes. He is Effective when slanting, as he keeps his feet moving forward even with contact. He can take on doubles, and it is impossible to block one-on-one in the run game.
• Has a solid Bull Rush to help push the pocket. One of the strongest players in the draft. He has a motor that does not stop and is a hard worker.
• Comes from a great school Lineage of interior Defensive Linemen in Clemson.
• Multiple Time voted Team Leader, All ACC player FOUR times, most in school history.

Tyler Davis Weaknesses

Due to aggressive and physical play, he has an injury history, including a torn biceps. He missed several games between 2020 and 2022.

Limited side-to-side athleticism, under the 4th percentile in the shuttle drill. This is seen on the field vs. zone blocks when moving laterally; the pad level gets high. Lack of size and Weight. He is only 301 pounds small for his play style.

He has short arms; his wingspan, arm length, and hand size are under the 20th percentile. This will allow more advanced and talented offensive linemen to access his chest. How much extension can he get against NFL offensive linemen?

He has no pass rush moves, uses of hands, or pass rush plan.  The only move Davis has is his athleticism to get up the field or Bull Rush. He was only a two-down player early in his career.

The Bottom Line is…..

Tyler Davis projects to be a serviceable backup with a starting upside to help an NFL team’s run defense. His arm length and injury history hurt his stock, but the production is too hard to pass on for too long.
