UCLA Football: Sixth-Year Senior Looks Back On Bruins Career As It Wraps Up
USA TODAY Sports

As the UCLA Bruins get ready to take on the Cal Golden Bears this weekend, it will be the final game for many of their upperclassmen. It will be a special moment, and the entire team knows that it will be emotional.

Sixth-year senior Alex Johnson reflected on his college career with his final game coming up, but he also admitted that he hasn’t had much time to fully look back on it all.

“The season’s gone by so fast for me and I’ve been taking things one day at a time. I wouldn’t go back and change anything — it’s been a great ride,” the safety said. “When I came here as a walk-on, I was just trying to figure out how to get to class and make sure I was on time for everything. Looking back I never would’ve guessed in a million years that things would work out this way.”

Johnson has spent his entire college career with the Bruins, so this will be a special moment for him. He would love nothing more than to get a win in the final regular season game that he suits up for.

He has put up his best year yet for the Bruins this year, posting 26 total tackles and four interceptions. Johnson has also added one tackle for loss on the year as well.

Head coach Chip Kelly reflected on the time that Johnson and other seniors have spent with the program, and is thankful for everything they did for the team.

“Alex Johnson and Kenny Churchwell are in Year 6 and some of these kids who got the extra year of eligibility have been the standard for this team. The work ethic they show up with every day, the attention to detail, how involved they are in the meetings, the training sessions, strength and conditions stuff, they’ve been fantastic. We have great group of senior leaders here.”

The Bruins program has made plenty of strides over the last few years, and players like Johnson have been the reason why. It’s now become a relevant college football team, and with their move to the Big-10 next year, that should only continue to grow.
