Urban Meyer believes Caleb Williams is a danger to Archie Griffin's Heisman feat

Urban Meyer is a talking head on your television nowadays, but let's not forget that he knows a thing or two about high-level college football. He has a 187-32 record as a head coach and three national championships under his belt.

He's also coached multiple Heisman Trophy contenders and one Heisman Trophy winner, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in 2007.

All that said, what Meyer says about the Heisman trophy carries a bit of weight, and he seems to think that the clear-cut favorite heading into 2023, USC quarterback Caleb Williams, is a shoo-in to make some history.

Williams won the Heisman Trophy last season as a sophomore. The last and only player to have ever won back-to-back Heismans was Ohio State running back Archie Griffin in 1973 and 1974.

Recently speaking with On3, Meyer said he believes Griffin's landmark is likely to be matched by Williams.

“Archie is a great friend of mine,” Meyer said. “I think he’s in jeopardy every year. Heisman Trophy winners? There’s no seniors anymore. Seniors don’t win Heismans because seniors are gone. There’s not many seniors in power football anymore because they leave early for the draft.”

“We had a sophomore win it in Tim Tebow, Johnny Manziel won it as a freshman,” said Meyer. “[Williams] is really good so, yes, he’s in jeopardy of losing it.”

Meyer's point is a good one. The recent trend of players winning the Heisman as an underclassman does make it more likely that a back-to-back Heisman will be crowned. With that said, Tebow didn't do it, and neither did Manziel. 

Those are two of the best quarterbacks we've seen—ever—in college football history, so the confidence in which people are backing Williams heading into 2023 should just go to show how good he is.

If he wasn't basically guaranteed to be the top pick in next year's 2023 NFL Draft, he'd be the favorite to three-peat. 

The USC quarterback threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns last season with just five interceptions. He also rushed for 382 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
