Hong) When former USC Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley went down to an injury this past season, a lot of cardinal and gold fans wanted to see what the future held for the quarterbacks in waiting. In came in Max Wittek and threw for 388 yards, 2 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and 3 sacks for the season. It was a performance many fans were left scratching their heads as to how the future will bode for USC. Then the Trojans got lucky when 5-star recruit Max Browne sign his letter of intent to join USC and enrolled early in the spring to get a jump start on the competition. He was the top rated quarterback of his class and had the allure of being the next true freshman to start at QB for the men of Troy. USC headed into the offseason with three potential starting quarterbacks to fill in behind a long legacy of top-caliber quarterbacks. For a period head coach Lane Kiffin said all three quarterbacks had a chance at wining the starting role on the team. It wasn’t until recently when coach Kiffin informed the media the battle is down to two. Although Browne has put in the work and shown he is capable of starting, Kiffin felt the two other quarterbacks have been in his system for a couple of years now and are more prepared. The competition is down to Max Wittek, the most experienced of the three, and Cody Kessler, the fan favorite. Wittek posses a stronger arm then his opponent and stands 6-foot-4 to Kesslers 6-foot-1. Although Kessler is not as athletically talented as Wittek, he has not been fazed and showed the right poise to command the huddle. Kessler got the call last week to run with the first team during a scrimmage in the Coliseum and Wittek will most likely look to get the nod on the second go around. Reports are coming out that both quarterbacks are keeping it close so all eyes will be on who makes the biggest mistake first. Like the football saying goes “the backup quarterback is always the favorite guy on the team.” For whatever quarterback come out on top, they will be sure to get a lot of flak from fans unless they are able to deliver wins to their team.
