Although National Signing Day was in February, the saga that surrounded five star recruit Matthew Thomas, didn’t end with his signing of a national letter of intent on February sixth. Leading up to signing day, numerous reports indicated Thomas was considered a possible lean to uproot himself out of the state of Florida and sign with USC.  However, when signing day arrived, Thomas chose to stay close to home and become a Florida State Seminole, a decision that surprised many.  Then in May, Thomas informed Florida State he did not intend on honoring his commitment and would instead explore other options.  Clearly, Thomas’ heart was torn. Matthew Thomas (Photo credit: miamiherald.com) In an interview with Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald, he was quoted as saying, “I told my mom I didn’t want to sign with anybody and wait and give it a few days she said I couldn’t do that. She said, ‘FSU is a good school – pick them. It’s close to home.’ I wasn’t agreeing with it.  But I felt like I was being disrespectful to her if I didn’t sign.  So I made her happy.” Since learning of Thomas’ intention, Florida State remained steadfast in their assertion that they would not release Thomas from his letter of intent.  Meaning, Thomas would have to incur some penalties should he decide to attend another school; namely sitting out one year. Despite their stance, it was reported by Joe Schad on June 10 that Thomas had made a decision to enroll at USC.  Trojan fans began to rejoice – they finally got their guy. Then, before the sounds of Conquest could finish being played, Thomas released a statement the following day to Warchant.com, that after meeting with Florida State Head Coach Jimbo Fisher, Thomas had decided to honor his commitment to FSU. Although the Trojans lost out on Thomas, the fact that the situation appears to have come to an end is somewhat of a positive note for USC.  They can continue moving forward with their recruitment of players for the 2014 class without the concern of possibly having to hold a scholarship spot open for Thomas’ potential arrival.
