Franklin Boy’s Basketball: Franklin won the 3A boys state championship, destroying Columbia River 51-34 Saturday night. Led by Louisville-bound senior Peyton Siva, who scored 10 points, the Quakers outran Columbia River on their way to victory.
The only predictable problem for Franklin, 6-9 senior Steven Bjornstad, didn’t turn out to be such an issue. The center heated up too late, scoring only 6 of his 20 points in the first half. In the end it was all Franklin, who won their sixth state title ever. Grade: A

Kennedy Girl’s Basketball: The 3A girls title went to the Kennedy girls from Burien, who beat Shadle Park 50-43. The game was surprisingly close, with Shadle Park narrowing the gap several times during the game and cutting the lead down to three with less than a minute less.
The Lancers won despite below average play from star guard Yaz Fuller, who scored 20 points but went 3-14 on three point shooting and 7-25 overall. But Fuller ended up with the tournament MVP, and the Lancers ended up with a sweet state championship after a second-place finish last year. Grade: A
Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks continued to be active this offseason, trading away LB Julian Peterson for DL Cory Redding and a 5th round draft pick. In terms of talent, the Hawks did not receive the better end of the bargain, giving up their Pro-Bowl linebacker for a solid, but not exceptional, defensive lineman.
However, the move should improve the Seahawks as a whole. Redding will help stabilize a defensive line that has struggle the past few years, especially at defensive tackle. At age 28, he is reaching his prime, while the 30-year-old Peterson may soon decline. The absence of Peterson should also free up Leroy Hill to move into the evacuated role as pass rusher, a role in which Hill excelled in before JP arrived. Finally, the trade opens up the possibility of the Hawks drafting LB Aaron Curry, a very talented player, if he is available at #4. Grade: B
UW Men’s Basketball Team: The Huskies performed disappointingly at the Pac-10 tournament last week. They began well, defeating Stanford 85-73. However, they ended their short tournament run with a 75-65 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils. There was speculation that, if the Huskies won the Pac-10 tournament, they could have received as high as a #2 seed.
However, due to their semifinal loss, the Dawgs ended up with a #4 seed and will be playing Mississippi State in Portland. And though no game is a gimme in March, this game should turn out to be an easy win for UW. If the Dawgs win, they will only be one victory (likely against Purdue) away from another Sweet Sixteen appearance. From there, who knows? In the Big Dance, anything is possible.
On a side note, the Pac-10 as a whole did well Selection Sunday. USC earned an automatic bid, raising the number of teams in the tourney to five. And somehow, Arizona found a way to sneak into the tournament, becoming the sixth Pac-10 team in the NCAA tournament. Grade: C
