Two winless teams will try to get their contrasting offenses on track when Navy visits Penn State on Saturday. The Midshipmen (0-1) and their vaunted running game were held in check two weeks ago by Notre Dame in the season-opening loss in Ireland. After a bye, Navy's had two weeks to perfect its triple option for Penn State's strong front seven. The Nittany Lions (0-2) have their own worries with red zone offense and special teams. Coach Bill O'Brien said kicker Sam Ficken has been working hard in practice on technique after missing four field goals in the 17-16 loss at Virginia. Penn State may also have to start its third running back in three weeks if Bill Belton and Derek Day can't go because of injuries.

Penn State: Receiver and kicker leave team, but should we care?

I don’t want to say we’re being purposely misled by media coverage of Penn State’s football team in the wake of NCAA sanctions, but Thursday’s report that Penn State was losing its backup kicker was reported with this lede: “Penn State lost its 13th player since the football program was hit with NCAA sanctions this summer in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal...

Joy back in Happy Valley for one day

When the sun rose over Mount Nittany on Saturday morning, it had been 10 torturous months since Penn State last won a football game, and even longer since the Nittany Lions emerged victorious from Beaver Stadium. Granted, in college football, 10 months isn't all that long. Not with an eight-month offseason, anyway. But for most in and around the Penn State program, the wait...

Alumni-based Penn State group blasts Freeh report

A group of alumni and others with ties to Penn State is finding a lot to criticize in the Freeh report that detailed the university's response to allegations that an assistant coach was behaving inappropriately with children. Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship says its review of the report turned up ''failures'' involving lack of disclosure, witnesses who...

Penn State vs. Navy pre-game fly over

There is something special about a military fly over, and to me it never gets old. Penn State is observing military appreciation day as they host Navy this afternoon, and to add to the fanfare a pre-game military flyover was scheduled at the end of the Blue Band's performance of the National Anthem. Here was the view, as I saw it, from the upper deck in the north end zone, surrounded...

Q&A: Valuing sexual abuse claims not simple

Penn State already faces four lawsuits over the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, and at least 20 people with potential claims have already surfaced. It's unclear how many will press claims against Penn State or whether more will surface. After Sandusky's conviction on 45 child sexual abuse counts in June, the university signaled it hoped to settle with the victims...

PSU pair ask to be tried separately

Two former Penn State administrators facing charges related to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal are seeking to be tried separately. Defense lawyers asked a Dauphin County judge on Monday to split the criminal cases against former athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz. Curley and Schultz are charged with failing to report suspected child...

Lions face multiple challenges this week

After one of the toughest losses it has experienced in many years, the Penn State football team turns its attention to Navy with some significant challenges to face. The Nittany Lions (0-2) host Navy (0-1) 3:30 Saturday and need a win as badly as any team, school or fan base ever needed one. The good thing is that Navy doesn’t appear to be as good as either Ohio or Virginia...

Penn State Football: Nittany Lions host Navy

Two weeks later, Bill O’Brien is still searching for his first win at Penn State. He hopes the third time, Saturday in Beaver Stadium against Navy (0-1), will be the charm for his Nittany Lions (0-2). O’Brien watched his team, and specifically his defense, turn in an outstanding road performance last week at Virginia only to watch kicker Sam Ficken miss a game-winning field goal...

O'Brien, Lions Soak in First Win

Penn State beats up on Navy for the first victory under its new head coach and since NCAA sanctions were leveled against the program.

NCAA SMART BET: Saturday, September 15, 2012

NAVY (+7) at Penn State: Too many reasons not to take a chance on Navy in this great spot. First, PSU comes off a heartbreaking loss to Virginia last week. A game they should have won as they benefitted from four Virginia turnovers, but missed four field goals. Second, Navy comes off a bye after playing pretty poorly in Ireland verse ND two weeks ago. Third, PSU is still a depleted...
