UAB upsets No. 22 Southern Miss 34-31 (AP)

Ty Long kicked a 38-yard field goal with 3:04 left to lift UAB to a 34-31 upset of No. 22 Southern Mississippi on Thursday night. The Blazers (3-8, 3-5 Conference USA) earned their second victory ever against a ranked team, having beaten No. 17 East Carolina 36-17 in 1999. UAB was more than a three-touchdown underdog in this game.

Football. Jamie Bender Named C-USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week

UAB senior safety Jamie Bender was named the Conference USA Defensive Player-of-the-Week Monday after his outstanding all-around game Saturday in the Blazers' 28-23 loss at East Carolina. Bender registered a team-high 11 tackles in the contest and one tackle for loss, while causing two fumbles and returning an interception 35 yards for a touchdown.

Football. UAB's Darion Smith Tabbed To Rimington Trophy Watch List

UAB senior center Darion Smith is one of 42 players who has been named to the Spring Watch List for the 2011 Rimington Trophy. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate center. Smith started all 12 games in 2010 in his first season as a Blazer.

Herb Harrison Signs NLI To Continue Hoops Career At UAB

UAB men's basketball head coach Mike Davis announced the addition of Herb Harrison, a 6-8, 215-pound forward, who signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) on Friday and will continue his career with the Blazers. Harrison joins Kenneth "K.C." Whitaker, who signed an NLI during the early signing period last November, as the newest additions to the men's basketball program.
