Despite having the top program in the country, Penn State Wrestling surprisingly lost an athlete who had committed to wrestle for the school almost two years ago.
There is no better program in the nation right now than Penn State Wrestling. In March, they showed their continued dominance as the school took home a third straight “natty” as four members of their team — Levi Haines, Carter Starocci, Greg Kerkvliet, and Aaron Brooks — took home titles at this year’s National Championship.
It would seem like any young wrestler in the world would love to be a part of such an iconic folk wrestling dynasty. Well, there are actually some who feel they could have a better career elsewhere and an example of that occurred this week.
On Thursday, Bishop McCort High School senior Mason Gibson announced on X, formerly Twitter, that he would be rethinking the school he will attend this fall after committing to the Penn State Wrestling program in November 2022.

After a lot of thought and discussion, I have decided to withdraw my commitment to wrestle at Penn State and reopen my recruiting options. I would like to thank Penn State for their understanding and for ending this on good terms.

“After a lot of thought and discussion, I have decided to withdraw my commitment to wrestle at Penn State and reopen my recruiting options,” he wrote. “I would like to thank Penn State for their understanding and for ending this on good terms.”
Gibson is a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and finished fourth in this past season’s state championships at 132 pounds. Beyond passing on the opportunity to wrestle at the top program in the nation, Gibson also leaves behind his brother Erik who committed at the same time and finished his Freshman season last month.
This is not the first time the young grappler changed his mind on where he will compete in college after changing course and decommiting from Cornell to join the Penn State Wrestling team two years ago.
