Hardik Pandya captained the Indian T20 team in the absence of Rohit Sharma after the 2022 T20 World Cup. He oversaw the Indian team in a couple of series against New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Despite leading the team when Rohit Sharma was not available, Hardik Pandya will not be captaining India in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Sharma returned to T20Is and was reappointed as the Indian captain despite missing 24 matches.

Now there are reports of Pandya not having a leadership role in the Indian WC squad. He is in contention with Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi Capitals (DC), to become Sharma’s deputy. The wicket-keeper captained India during a 5-match T20I series against South Africa in 2022, drawing the series 2-2.

Currently Pandya captains the out-of-form Mumbai Indians, who are 9th in the points table. The Pant-led-DC are 6th, four points above MI.

Rishabh Pant’s can make his India comeback in 2024 T20 World Cup

Rishabh Pant was in a near-fatal car accident in December 2022, which caused him multiple injuries to his back, legs and face. The accident ruled him out for 14-months, and the keeper underwent rehabilitation in the National Cricket Academy.

He finally returned to professional cricket in the 2024 IPL, captaining DC and is on course to have one of his best seasons. He has scored 398 runs in 11 innings while being involved in 14 dismissals (11 catches and 3 stumpings).

With this incredible comeback, the BCCI have decided to bring Pant back to the Indian team. He will be India’s first choice keeper, beating KL Rahul and Sanju Samson to the spot. He last played a T20I during India’s tour of New Zealand after the 2022 T20 World Cup.
