President Barack Obama spoke at Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate on Wednesday, calling for reductions in U.S. and Russian nuclear stockpiles, for a movement to confront climate change, and for a "fighting spirit'' of activism for freedom around the world. Oh, and part of the day also included a meal with German hero Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks star who celebrated his 35th birthday while watching the speech, snapping photos, and then dining with the President. Berlin's fight for peace a half-century ago makes Obama's appearance there a symbolic one. It was almost 50 years ago when John F. Kennedy made his famous Cold War speech in the once-divided city. Nowitzki's inclusion in the presentation is symbolic, too; the future Hall-of-Famer is iconic enough to be asked to be present in a way that represents his native Germany, his adopted United States and because of the message of the moment, the world.
