President Barrack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. If the President had a son, he is not sure if he would allow him to play football. President Obama spoke on the topic during an interview with the New Republic.
“I’m a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football. And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence. In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won’t have to examine our consciences quite as much.”
The President went on to speak about how he is more worried about college football players than professional players, because they lack a union to protect them.
“I tend to be more worried about college players than NFL players in the sense that the NFL players have a union, they’re grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies. You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That’s something that I’d like to see the NCAA think about.”
It definitely is interesting to see the President’s views on the subject.
Personally, I would allow my son to choose whether or not he wanted to play football. My parents never restricted which sports I could or could not play and I would want to provide my son (or daughter) with a similar opportunity.
I believe we have not seen the end of major changes in the NFL and college hoping to improve player’s safety. Similar to NASCAR following the death of Dale Earnhardt, I believe the NFL is going to continue to take steps towards better protecting their players.
While I doubt the President’s words are the reason these changes will continue to come about, they do add some fuel to the fire.
In the end, if a former player or their families are successful in suing the NFL over head trauma, the league will have to move towards fixing that for future players.
