Sydney Sweeney has said she thought about stepping away from her acting career to take up boxing after playing Christy Martin.

The actress, who is known for roles in shows like Euphoria and The White Lotus, spent months training to portray Martin and says she fell in love with the sport along the way. It even got to the point where she was thinking about giving it a real go.

And it seems Sweeney’s interest hasn’t faded. She still wants to put her training to use one day, possibly by stepping into the ring for a charity fight.

Sweeney open to fighting for real after Christy Martin role

Sydney Sweeney had to transform her entire lifestyle to take on the role of Christy Martin. She left behind the comforts of Hollywood and threw herself into a rigorous training schedule, eventually growing a genuine passion for the sport.

“For about two and a half months, I would weight train in the morning for an hour, box three hours in the middle of the day, and then another hour of weight training at night,” Sweeney told Sportscasting.com. “I put on 35lb and it was hard.”

“I started losing weight once I upped my boxing time and had to find that balance, just continually pounding more and more protein shakes.”

During filming, she even thought about pursuing boxing full-time – something she hasn’t completely ruled out. “There was a moment in the middle of filming where I was like, ‘Should I give it all up and fight because I love this?’” she continued.

“Christy said she’d sign me up. So, this isn’t as hypothetical as you actually think it is. Yeah, I’d totally do a charity bout, that’d be so sick.”

Sydney Sweeney backs herself to ‘take a punch’ as Christy Martin considers promoting her first fight

Sweeney has been open about her interest in stepping into the ring, though she hasn’t given any hints about who her first opponent might be. The plan is for it to be a charity exhibition, but details remain under wraps for now.

“I think what would get me through a fight is that I can take a punch,” she said. “I wouldn’t quit… Who would I fight? It’s a surprise. You’ll have to wait. I’m serious. You’ve got to stay tuned for the pay-per-view and you’ll see it.”

While Martin claims to have some names in mind for possible opponents, Sweeney says she hasn’t heard from any promoters yet – just fighters reaching out directly.

She joked: “Nobody’s offered to get me into the ring. I have gotten some interesting DMs from some boxers though.”
