The best Nickelodeon animated series from the '90s and early 2000s, ranked

Take a walk down memory lane by revisiting some of Nickelodeon's best animated series from the 1990s and early 2000s. See how your favorites compare to my ranking of worst to best.

'ChalkZone'

'ChalkZone'
Nickelodeon

I vaguely remember ChalkZone as being fairly entertaining. The series ran from 2002 to 2005 and almost didn't get an entire fourth season until Nickelodeon decided to air the rest of the season three whole years later. Out of all the '90s and early 2000s animated shows, this one was just okay, but the theme song absolutely rocked.

'My Life as a Teenage Robot'

'My Life as a Teenage Robot'
Nickelodeon

I was definitely into My Life as a Teenage Robot back in the day, which was evidently sometime between seasons one and two in 2003-05. Season three aired later on Nicktoons from 2008–2009, so I didn't see it, but I'm sure it was still great.

'All Grown Up!'

'All Grown Up!'
Nickelodeon

I loved Rugrats, so I was very interested in All Grown Up! The show ran from 2003-08 for five seasons, and although it wasn't the best of Nickelodeon's animated programming, it was for the fans, so it gets points for that.

'Invader Zim'

'Invader Zim'
Nickelodeon

I wish I had watched Invader Zim more as a kid, but I guess I wasn't into the animation style. The series had an interesting run on Nickelodeon with season one from 2001-02, and later on, Nicktoons, after most of season two didn't air until 2006. It might've been too weird for me then, but its humor is timeless.

'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

'Avatar: The Last Airbender'
Nickelodeon

I'm sure the fans are coming for me. I know that Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered a favorite by many, and from what I've seen, it's a fine show. It ran for three seasons, from 2005 to 2008, and even though it may not have held my attention, I can recognize that it is one of Nickelodeon's better shows.

'As Told by Ginger'

'As Told by Ginger'
Nickelodeon

As Told by Ginger was good, okay? The show's three seasons ran from 2000 to '04, with its last episode airing in 2006 on Nicktoons. Six unaired episodes remain of season three, which you can watch via streaming on Paramount+ if you never got that closure.

'Danny Phantom'

'Danny Phantom'
Nickelodeon

This show was wildly underrated at the time, in my opinion, but now it seems to have gained the respect it so rightfully deserves. Danny Phantom ran for three seasons, from 2004 to 2007, and is easily one of series creator Butch Hartman's best, next to The Fairly OddParents.

'The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius'

'The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius'
Nickelodeon

The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron was always so funny, mainly because of Carl Wheezer. It ran for (you guessed it) three seasons, from 2002 to 2006, and was nominated for and won numerous awards.

'Aaahh!!! Real Monsters'

'Aaahh!!! Real Monsters'
Nickelodeon

Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was quintessential Nickelodeon programming in the nineties in that it was weird, and we loved every minute of it. The show ran for four seasons, from 1994 to 1997, and was certainly not for everybody. You wouldn't see this kind of stuff on today's Nickelodeon, hence the nostalgia.

'The Ren & Stimpy Show'

'The Ren & Stimpy Show'
Nickelodeon

The Ren & Stimpy Show was almost to the point of not being kid-friendly, which is probably why it's one of the most memorable animated shows of the nineties. The show ran from 1991 to 1995 for a total of five seasons. Though controversial, audiences generally loved it, and it has only gotten more popular as time has passed.

'The Angry Beavers'

'The Angry Beavers'
Nickelodeon

I never got tired of watching The Angry Beavers. The award-winning series ran for four seasons, from 1997 to 2003, and was fun for the whole family. Yes, I did enjoy it more than Ren & Stimpy. Get over it!

'Action League Now!'

'Action League Now!'
Nickelodeon

Do you all remember this show? Action League Now! was featured on Nickelodeon's animated sketch comedy series, KaBlam!, for four seasons from 1995 to 2000 before flying solo as a spinoff series in 2001 to '02. Though absolutely ridiculous, it was one of the funniest sketch series on TV, and we nineties kids couldn't imagine our childhoods without it.

'Rocko's Modern Life'

'Rocko's Modern Life'
Nickelodeon

Rocko's Modern Life was iconic for many reasons. It launched careers for voice actors like Tom Kenny (the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants) and writers who went on to create some of our favorite shows. The series ran for four seasons, from 1993 to 1996, and like Ren & Stimpy, it pushed the envelope, which is why it's still loved today.

'Rocket Power'

'Rocket Power'
Nickelodeon

I loved Rocket Power growing up. I'm pretty sure I only wanted to learn how to ride a skateboard because of this show. Well, that and maybe Tony Hawk's Pro Skater . The show ran for four seasons, and it kept my friends and me riding bikes, scooters, or anything around the neighborhood from 1999 to 2004.

'CatDog'

'CatDog'
Nickelodeon

CatDog was delightfully weird, wasn't it? I couldn't get enough of this show! It ran from 1998 to 2005, with four seasons, and featured the voice-acting talents of Tom Kenny and the Jim Cummings.

'The Wild Thornberrys'

'The Wild Thornberrys'
Nickelodeon

The Wild Thornberrys was such a fantastic addition to the Nickelodeon lineup at the time, with its amazing cast and guest stars that always kept things interesting. It ran for five seasons, from 1998 to 2004, and produced two feature films, The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002) and a crossover with Rugrats called Rugrats Go Wild (2003). You could say it was "smashing!"

'The Fairly Oddparents'

'The Fairly Oddparents'
Nickelodeon

We're in top-five territory now! I watched The Fairly OddParents more than any child probably should, and I don't regret a thing. The show ran for 10 whole seasons, from 2001 to 2017, and gave us spin-off series and even crossover episodes with Jimmy Neutron. If you understand my Fairly OddParents references, we can be friends.

'Rugrats'

'Rugrats'
Nickelodeon

I had a Rugrats-themed birthday party, so you could say my adoration was serious. Its nine-season run lasted from 1991 to 2004 and gave us three feature films: The Rugrats Movie (1998), Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (2000), and the crossover with The Wild Thornberrys.

'Hey Arnold!'

'Hey Arnold!'
Nickelodeon

Hey Arnold! is in the top three for a reason. The show had five seasons from 1996 to 2004, as well as a feature film and TV film that came out fairly recently that I will probably never see. It's incredibly quotable and one of the first series that comes to mind when I think of quality Nickelodeon programming from the nineties and early 2000s.

'Doug'

'Doug'
Nickelodeon

When I think of my childhood, I think of how much time I spent watching Doug. If you're not familiar, man, you missed out. Seasons one through four aired on Nickelodeon from 1991 to '94, while the remaining three aired on ABC until 1999. Though I'm sure watching Doug's 1st Movie (1999) as an adult is a painful experience, you should know that I loved it and owned it on VHS tape.

'SpongeBob SquarePants'

'SpongeBob SquarePants'
Nickelodeon

I have to give the No. 1 spot to the longest-running animated show on Nickelodeon, SpongeBob SquarePants, which has been running for 14 seasons and counting since 1999. I believe millennials especially have a unique connection with this show that can't be put into words. Simply put, SpongeBob brings people together. It very well might've been one of our first comfort shows.
