The greatest horror sidekicks

It was sad to see Renfield , the comedic continuation of Universal Studio’s original Dracula film starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, bomb so hard at the box office. For starters, Nicolas Cage is Dracula. What more do you want? The actual Dracula as Dracula?

It’s also a charming reminder of how big of a role sidekicks have played in horror movies and shows. Horror isn’t known for producing heroes. It’s quite the opposite. Usually, the antagonist gets top billing on the posters and even the marquee. Well, even the bad guy needs a little help now and then.

Renfield in 'Dracula'

Renfield in 'Dracula'
Universal Pictures

Dwight Frye’s maniac take on Dracula's right-hand man is one of the most inspired performances in horror movie history. Frye easily takes on the challenge of playing both sides of the meek lawyer who becomes Dracula’s bug-eating, crazed compadre opposite the iconic Bela Lugosi. His insane, high-pitched laugh and vein-bulging maniac behavior set the bar very high for every actor who attempted to take on the role.
