Ex-F1 driver deems missing out on a Ferrari seat as an ‘open wound’
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Ferrari F1 team is one of the most historic outfits at the pinnacle of motor racing. The outfit has so far managed to amass 15 drivers and 16 constructors titles and ahead of the 2024 season, ex-F1 driver, Robert Kubica, has talked about missing out on driving for them.

Ahead of the 2012 F1 season, Robert Kubica had signed a pre-agreement with the Maranello-based team to drive for them alongside Fernando Alonso. However, because of the injuries he sustained in 2011 during rallying, it never came to fruition.

Kubica to date regrets missing out on the golden opportunity. While talking about it with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he recently said, (H/T: racingnews365)

I think that driving a Ferrari represents something different than racing with other brands. In the past I had looked for Ferrari many times. It didn’t happen because life served me another scenario, and I confess that an open wound remained.

Looking at the reaction of Kubica, it is quite clear that he still feels saddened by missing out on the opportunity of driving for the Ferrari team. In his case, the stars just did not align for him in 2012 to drive the Italian outfit’s F1 car.

Robert Kubica will drive for Ferrari in the Hypercar class

While Robert Kubica missed out on driving for Ferrari in 2012, after more than a decade, he has finally got his wish fulfilled. Kubica will drive for the Italian team in the upcoming season of the well-known Hypercar class.

The Polish driver, before agreeing on a deal to race a Ferrari 499P for AF Corse in the Hypercar class, won the LMP2 class title in the WEC. This is one of the main reasons why he was approached by Ferrari to join their Hypercar class team.

Robert Kubica’s days as a full-fledged F1 driver are long gone and considering this, it is really nice to see him getting his wish of driving for Ferrari fulfilled, although in a different category. Kubica is currently 39 years old and it is going to be fascinating to see how long he is able to prolong his racing career.
