Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports

After what seems like a lifetime in F1, Fernando Alonso has decided to stay a little longer in the sport. He recently extended his contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2026. According to the Spaniard, he intends to stay in sport till he believes he can compete at a high level.

After renewing his contract with a Silverstone-based team, Alonso did admit to having talks with other teams. Previously he was linked to Mercedes, but now the Spaniard is no longer available in the driver market.

While talking about the whole experience he had the following to say.

I did speak with other people as well, yes. I think it’s normal when you enter negotiations, you need to balance a little bit [and ask] ‘what is the market? All the other conversations were just light, and never came to any conclusions or something like that. Fernando Alonso told: Racingnews365

In recent times, Alonso found himself incessantly in the headlines regarding his F1 future. He is the oldest driver on the grid, however, it has never affected his on-track performances. Last season, he pulled many podiums for Aston Martin in the first half.

Aston Martin’s persistence made Fernando Alonso extend his contract

While Fernando Alonso has admitted to having talks with a few teams, he showed complete faith in the Aston Martin project by extending his contract. According to him, it was the team’s desire to work with him that ultimately led to him renewing his deal.

Alonso has been making his trade with Aston Martin since 2023.

In my head, Aston was the logical thing for me to do. In the end, I felt the most wanted Aston Martin. Maybe more time was needed, all these kind of things. While in Aston, it was a clear desire to work together, which was the same that I had. That’s why it came very easy. Fernando Alonso via: Racingnews365

After spending a season with Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso has decided to stay with them for two more years. Despite being in his 40s, he is as fast as ever and has been regularly giving the young guns a run for their money. Keeping in view his contract extension, it will be fascinating to see how he will perform going ahead.
