Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Former F1 driver, Mark Webber, the seasoned sage of the racing circuit, asserts that McLaren hit the jackpot by bidding farewell to Daniel Ricciardo. Webber, now the manager of Oscar Piastri who replaced Ricciardo, did not mince words when he declared that McLaren’s move was the right option for the team.

In 2021, Daniel Ricciardo made a move from Renault to McLaren, anticipating a stronger season with the team’s resurgence. Unfortunately, the Australian driver grappled with adapting to the car, experiencing a notable dip in form. Despite clinching a victory at the 2021 Italian GP, his two-year tenure lacked significant highlights. Particularly in 2022, he faced considerable competition from Lando Norris and was released from his contract for 2023.

Speaking to Soy Motors.com, Webber boldly asserts that McLaren struck gold by parting ways with Daniel Ricciardo. “Daniel had two very tough seasons,” he admits. Webber commented that he previously mentioned he was seizing the seat from another Australian, and as Formula 1 has few Australians it was justifiable. He went on to clarify asserting;

But what can you say, it was a decision by McLaren and in the end, it was clear that it was the right one.

According to Webber, McLaren’s decision was inevitable. “If Oscar had not replaced him, another driver would have,” he opines, highlighting the undeniable need for change. Webber emphasizes McLaren’s commitment to young talent, citing it as the catalyst for success. Webber, Piastri’s guide, played a pivotal role, even apologizing to Ricciardo for his role in the saga

Mark Webber dispels the rumors that Oscar Piastri had ample offers

Amidst the drama, Piastri’s unexpected journey unfolded. Initially announced as an Alpine driver, trust shattered, and McLaren emerged as the unforeseen destination. While the news became solid, many speculated that the F2 champion had many offers in his hand from various teams, which his manager clarified that they didn’t.

People thought we had a lot of options for 2023, but really, we didn't...At McLaren, they were fantastic and very clear from the beginning.

McLaren’s 2023 season, with Piastri in the driver’s seat, defied expectations. A revamped approach led to nine podium finishes and a sprint race victory. Despite a rocky start, the team climbed to fourth, with Piastri clinching two back-to-back podiums and the Rookie of the Season award.
